Monday's Meme - The State of My Inventory

Another Monday Meme from Strawberry Singh. This subject is the one I usually "mentor" new people about who come into SL. It is very easy to lose or forget things. I don't want to get rid of things, you especially may have a need for a 32 prim cow or a 6 prim fork, both of which I have retrieved and used in the past week from my inventory. I try to be organized, making outfits and dating them, putting in photos when possible, making folders, using texture organizers, etc. Experience though, teaches many of us that have been around awhile, that having multiple copies gives a sense of security. I also find that I use my blog to look for things that have failed to appear in my inventory searches because of the poor label I used.

Well here is the meme:

1. What is your current inventory number? –85,585 (but haven't emptied my trash in a while. I have to go through it before I will do it)

2. If you had to delete your whole inventory and could only keep one thing, what would it be? I love my objects, assuming I could keep what my avatar was wearing, it would be my house I built, although it's too many prims for one object, it's still one "thing".

3. What is the last thing you purchased? – Aushka&Co Play Node Top Mesh (knotted tank top with color change hud)

4. Which item do you wear most often? – Maitreya Mesh Eyelashes (former group gift) they fit perfectly (after adjusting)

5. When you search for the word penis, how many items pop up? 6!!! (3 are gestures) includes a "Penis Brain" that I had no idea I had.

Do You See What I See? More Musings on Experiences in Light and Graphics in Public Places

I have become fascinated by the differences in the region's settings and what we "see" in different viewers and settings. So, I have started to go places, take a snapshot and ask if that is what someone else there "sees", and what viewer are they using. I have the new materialsenabled  server-side appearance Firestorm: "High" graphics, not "Ultra" in settings, no change to sim environmental settings, pics are "raw" -  no picture changes except cropping in some cases. I wanted to see sims where settings were made for a group of people, not necessarily purely landscape/environmental sims.

It started yesterday morning with me seeing this. There's too much brightness and the textures are rather blurry here. (read previous post of my apology, here, because this is not what the designer sees).

I was feeling bad, like I had done something wrong for expressing my opinion, so, here I am sitting in the dunce seat at Club AI. This seat is off to my left of the stage with bright lighting on the stage. Lighting looks good, appropriate, yes, plenty of shadows but I'm not washed out and ashy. This is just high graphics, shadows are NOT enabled, this is from the ambient lighting.

Here are a bunch of glowing lights and wall lighting, view from the dance floor at AI.

This is another club, The Velvet, near some bright lighting, glowy lanterns, mesh textures.

The Velvet in a darker area.

This is the music venue, Guthries, next to a table lamp and bright walls.

Back at Alt7. Where is that brightness coming from? The bright lines on the cheek bones? The grungy shadows on the face? I am told there are no lights here, except some spots that project on the walls.

Mariah at Alt7 has the same view. Lighting (or it's effect) from above make cheekbones stand out and the rest of the face is in shadows. Mariah was sitting in an area under the steps, a place you would assume to be darker, in the shadows. This is what makes many people resort to face lights.

This is Rara's, an outdoor music venue, enclosed, the sky is background, not Linden Skies. There are lots of mesh textures and the lighting is late afternoon with a strong sun. You can see an unrezzed tree in the background, my draw distance wasn't all the way up. In this strong light, avatars and objects look good, although in hot-feeling lighting.

This is the front of Rara's showing ambient and local lighting on the house. (Kris Wapole was playing :))

The lighting here looks natural. These were what a friend saw in the new FS, same as me. These 2 pictures were taken as the sun moved to more sunset, and became "cooler", the bottom a little later that the previous.

Well, here's my final opinion, designers need to be aware that most people do not have PCs running ultra graphics. Public sims, that expect a wide variety of avatars to visit, should adjust their graphics to what most people will experience as a good or excellent environments, not questioning their own settings and hardware capabilities. I can enjoy virtual environments that are a sci-fi experience, or have atmospheres that relate to the story being told, but I think for highly social settings the ambience needs to project pleasing and inviting environments. Just MHO.

Apology to Judas

I must apologize to Judas for some of the comments about the recently renovated club, Alt7, I made in my post about Flat Rodvic Linden.

"the decor is trying to have an over haul. I hope that things get more on track. Currently it is a mish-mash of several people's furniture and textures that blur, the lighting all wrong, BUT the music and friendly banter are still there. It is being worked on, so if you visit, we are all holding out hope for some refinement."

Judas runs a BETA viewer and has an advanced graphics computer and sees things differently than most of us. I spoke with him this morning and he was upset at my criticism. We looked at different light settings and shared pictures of what we saw.

What I see with the mid-day settings and lights on the plot

What Judas sees with the mid-day settings and lights on the plot.

What Judas sees with midnight setting.

What I see with midnight setting.

What I see with my preferred windlight setting. (too bright, still)

What Judas sees in his BETA viewer (pic from when he was building).

So perspective is more than what it is one's head, it also changes with the viewer one uses, preferences selected, and the graphics on the computer. Judas has used his own money to upload textures and his vacation time to work on the new Alt7. I paid him for his Lindens spent in some sort of sympathetic gesture. If you see Judas in SL please offer some kind words for his efforts, he was pissed!

Judas also commented on my use of font in my blog, so I'm giving a more traditional font a try.

Came for Freebie, Found a Great Designer - !Soul

I went to !Soul for this harem pants and top which is a gift for joining (L5).

Then I saw this great gown for only L60! and it comes with a short skirt version :) It is nicely detailed and textured. When I looked around, I saw that all the items in the store were L60. I had a !Soul mini dress found in the Starfish Hunt (a couple of months ago) and really liked it. I should have visited sooner. I find L60 very reasonable, as usually the designer/seller is texturing premade mesh forms. If you take a look on the Market Place you'll find tons of full-perm mesh clothing, and if you have a little time and some very basic PS skills you can be a designer, too. At this price point, like the weekly sales at a variety of stores, I'm a buyer.

I'm in a Gifting Mood Today

The theme this year for Burning Man and SL's Burn2 event is "Cargo Cult". It takes some thinking to wrap your head around the theme, but it is awesome!

The Man rides a crate of gems, not valued for their representation of money and wealth, but for the light they refract and reflect.

Small enough to wear as a necklace and it does not protrude to far. If anyone knows of a script to work as a wearable hinge (door), please let me know, and I will modify it.

Available as a freebie in the Market Place.

LOVE THIS MEME, from Strawberry... "Flat Rodvic Linden"

This meme is from Strawberry Singh, and I have been giggling since I first read the challenge. I loved the Flat Stanley Projects, in fact had students take part in creating them several years ago. And what a way to send a message to Rod! I can't wait to see some of the responses. This will be

First I took Rod to my usual favorite club in SL, Alt7. I've been going here for over 6 years. The club is undergoing some transformations; some of the long standing DJs are taking sabbaticals and the decor is trying to have an over haul. I hope that things get more on track. Currently it is a mish-mash of several people's furniture and textures that blur, the lighting all wrong, BUT the music and friendly banter are still there. It is being worked on, so if you visit, we are all holding out hope for some refinement.

The next place I wanted to take Rod was my home,  a Homestead Sim I have had for over 4 years. As a homestead I am at the mercy of the owner of the full sim to which this is a part. I am now under a second owner of the group of sims. I love my home and although many people think I am silly for this expensive hobby (95 US dollars a month), for the amount of time I spend making things and learning it is far cheaper than playing golf, collecting some things, etc. I have no commercial aspirations in SL. So my message to Rodvic would be to allow individual ownership of Homesteads and not have to have them attached to a full sim or their owner.

So.. I could stand "Flat Rod" somewhere, let him get to know and like my place... let's see here..

He matches my sinks, although I don't think I want him here.

Taking some mirror shots... why won't they smile?

The Shiney

I saw this posted about the "Shiney" reflections now available on the new Firestorm at New World Notes. Well there are limits, I can't get a "mirror" like reflection at all, even being very close.

And, why won't the sinks be reflected? They are slightly transparent, so I turned that off to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't.

I think I still like it. I'll need to experiment some more.
